Also, I like hamburgers and sandwiches with fried or sunny-side-up eggs on them. Delicious. So I think your son is a genius.

Oh this made me smile in sympathy. My girl’s half-birthday was yesterday and she was all sulky because I FORGOT to wish her happy half-birthday in the morning. Also we did not give her a PRESENT. For her half-birthday!

Spouse and I decided that from here on out, the half-birthday theme will be “Be grateful that you’re not working in a factory 100 years ago, or fighting the pigs for scraps like you could’ve been in the Middle Ages. Now eat your [big swear deleted] cupcake.”

Yeah. No feet.

Mel,
I have been reading your blog for a long time. I generally don’t comment but this time I just had to. I can sooo relate to this. My daughter is 9 and we have been through similar situations. As an aside, I think that kids love popcorn shrimp. The jumbo shrimp is not always as appetizing for kids I suppose. This is such a rough age as you know, you have been through it. My daughter is very tough hearted and my husband would never allow her order something else if she did not like her supper. She would say she is full and then ask for a snack as soon as we got home. Grrr. Frustrating but..this too shall pass.

I’m sorry your young boy was sad on his B-day. You’re a good mom, though – you made him feel better. Yay!

Do you know that that DQ has been there since I was about 5 yrs old? Of course it’s been made over once in the late 70′s or maybe early 80′s. My Pop used to love taking us there for Dilly Bars.

Oh goodness, I survived all the Emo Girl moments…and now you tell me I have Emo Boy stuff to look forward to? I mean…he breaks down and cries when he can’t understand his first grade math now, but this will get worse in a few years?? While I’m becoming ever more perimenopausal? Yikes!!

You saved the day by remembering the cupcakes and doing the one-on-one Dairy Queen trip. That’s good Mom Skillz.

I feel sad for your son. We had a birthday boy like that over here for a few years too. Now we buy him license tabs for his birthday every year and he’s very happy about that.
