Book Review: Return to Me

A few weeks ago, I read Robin Lee Hatcher’s newest novel, Return to Me. (I received this copy free in exchange for this blog review.)

This book retells the biblical story of the prodigal son . . . only in a modern day setting. The prodigal is Roxy, a young woman who ran off to squander her inheritance on her quest to become a country music star in Nashville. The story opens when Roxy decides to return home, to the father and sister she hasn’t spoken to in seven years. The question then become what will happen between Roxy and her sister and her sister’s fiance’, who happens to be Roxy’s ex-boyfriend.

This was a quick read (less than 24 hours start to finish) and required very little from me in terms of attention and concentration. Perhaps it suffered in comparison because I had just finished reading Leif Enger’s excellent Peace Like a River. At any rate, if you enjoy a straight-forward Christian novel, this is the book for you. Hatcher keeps the story moving along briskly and manages to make the story of the prodigal come alive for modern readers.

I’m reading Peace Like a River, as per your recommendation, and I’m really enjoying it! There are a couple of passages I’ve had my older kids read, just because they are delicious. :-)
